Hi Brian,
good thinking about personas, I could ad the following:
- it is better to have a '4 hour ad hoc persona', than have not a persona at all. It gives your thinking a direction.
- persona is a tool (not an achievement as such) , it should be useful for the one who works with it or makes design decisions. And use it in customer journeys and in reviews.
- personas should be based on real data, that's why I call my reality personas: 'data storytelling'
- if you don't have data (although this sounds like an excuse in times of social media, google analytics and free survey tools), or you are aiming to a user (or person) who is not yet a client or using your site, you can think about 'aspirational personas' (just make clear that they are not based on facts, but on imagination, vision)

Here are two links with more info:
- Data storytelling with personas (a lecture I held in Utrecht) http://www.slideshare.net/creacomp/data-storytelling-with-personas-utrecht

- The biggest persona project I did in the last years

@ Stephan, thanks for mentioning the Persona Core Poster

Design Strategist, vs. Marketing Manager.
Let's be clear Most Design Managers and Brand Designer are strategists, all Marketing Managers are not.

Ideally Business and Designers are partners, however as a package design manager the roles are changing. I find there is less and less collaboration and respect for design and more and more marketers directing design and Design Managers relegated to project managers. Marketing Managers roll is best at directing strategy vs. directing executional details of a design. As Marketing leads creative I see opinions leading design. As each higher level of marketing management reviews the design, layers of design changes destroy the integrity of the design. In the end designs are often watered down or compromised.

Excellent hype for an essential collaborative suite!
Journeys - and the people whose experiences we narrate within - are what I like to call \"sandbox\" deliverables. At their best, they\'re a fluid collaborative space where all vested disciplines should have a voice. I\'ve made a lot of friends in technology, UX, strategy, and brand by front-loading design engagements with a healthy chunk of time for personas and journeys.
It\'s a safe place to ideate and iterate, where \"truthful\" storytelling trumps any one discipline\'s agenda. Great stuff.
